2018 Vahsholtz Cousins Reunion
2018 Reunion Information July 12-15, 2018 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin This information can be found in further detail in the Spring 2018 Newsletter HEY COUSINS, I’m looking forward to meeting all of you! I know that Sharon and Lloyd have been attending these reunions for years; but I’ve never had the chance before. Sharon, her sister Gayle and I, have had our DNA tests done. I thought it would be fun if others who have had DNA tests done to bring your information to the Reunion and we can compare our countries of origin and ancestors we all have in common. Having a cup of coffee with you, visiting and getting to know you is tops on my list for our reunion. History of the Vahsholtz-Cousins Reunions
[div class=”content-2-col-left”] These reunions have been held for some 50 years, inspired by the work of Louis and Melvina Hitzeman. Many years ago Dennis Vahsholtz and his mother Lillie wrote this brief history: “This is what my Mom and I can remember. Aunt Meta Veerhusen thought it would be a good idea to get the nearby relatives together for a type of reunion every fall, just to stay in touch. These would have been the sons and daughters of Ida and Ed Vahsholtz, their 1st and 2nd cousins and Aunts and Uncles that were still living. This was started in the early 70s and was usu-ally held at local restaurants in Herington or Abilene. After a few years they started to invite more people and contact in-formation got shared. A couple of times pot luck dinners were held after a church service, but not very many. Lloyd and Ella Vahsholtz from Washington State started coming and also the Americus, Emporia and Council Grove relatives, and it just kept expand-ing. 2016 Reunion In Idaho
Sometimes life throws us an unexpected curve. Sometimes it turns out the better choice! That’s what happened in July when we were making final commitments for our 2016 Vahsholtz Family Reunion in Idaho! It turned out we couldn’t get Camp Perkins guaranteed for any weekend during the summer of 2016! After a wee bit of panic, my level-headed husband suggested we take a look at the brand new River Canyon Retreat Center (pictured above) that just opened in Garden Valley! We were amazed at how the owners had turned old, unused buildings into very modern, beautiful accommodations with a great variety of dorm-type sleeping facilities, a beautiful kitchen/dining area, a full-size gym for all kinds of sports which includes a rock climbing wall and a stage (for family talent to be shared?). There are also RV hookups, it’s handicap accessible, the facility is fully air conditioned, there’s an above-ground pool, a pond stocked with fish, a mini-zip line and a lovely expanse of lawn for just sitting and enjoying the view of the nearby mountains in this beautiful valley. 2016 Reunion in Idaho or Why the Heck Would Anyone Want to Go to IDAHO for the VAHSHOLTZ FAMILY REUNION? By Ruth (Vahsholtz) Richter There’s probably a good chance that many of the Vahsholtz Family have never been to Idaho? Or, if so, maybe you traveled through on Interstate 84 headed for Oregon or Washington. That would give you a very poor impression of Idaho! I’d suggest looking at the re- union here as a Once in a Lifetime Trip, even if you have been here before. Then plan to include a visit to Yellowstone National Park, which could be right on your way to get to Lutheran Camp Perkins. Or add on some days and go to Glacier National Park in Montana. Or through Yellowstone coming out and returning by way of Utah, which has many, many National Parks. Arches, Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Mesa Verde to name a few. Another option for a really perfect vacation while at the July 2016 reunion is to just stay in the Sawtooth Mountain Range area and take in all the sights, rafting opportunities, ghost towns, shopping at high-end Sun Valley.
